Every Plan Includes

Core features that make iPlay Phonics the world's first voice interactive phonics learning game.

🎤

Voice Interactive Technology

The world's first phonics game to use voice recognition. The voice interactive technology ensures correct pronunciation of the written word, thus aiding fluency. Children speak the sounds and get instant feedback.

🎲

Snakes & Ladders Format

Based on the classic board game. The challenge is to get to the top of the board and win — that's exactly how it should be introduced. A bit of fun and "I'll bet I'll beat you to the top!"

📈

Progressive Difficulty

14 different levels promote and extend language skill development. Each level is directly linked to a particular phoneme or grapheme. For example, level 7c deals with the sounds ow/oa making the "oh" sound.

💪

No Perceived Failure

Specifically designed to increase self-confidence in literacy, allow minor mispronunciations, and make sure there is no perceived failure in a game. The immediacy of feedback prevents emotional responses — the main cause of barriers to learning.

🧠

Over-Learning for Long-Term Memory

The repetitive play encourages over-learning — putting information into the long-term memory — which especially benefits individuals with dyslexic tendencies. The more it is used, the more fluent the reader becomes.

📊

Progress Tracking

The feedback for parents is really being able to track the usage of the game. Words incorrectly pronounced are flagged for guidance and revision. Track fluency improvement over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is iPlay Phonics suitable for?

iPlay Phonics is designed for children of all ages who are learning to read. It's particularly effective for children just beginning their phonics journey (ages 4–6) and older children who need additional support. It has been used successfully at both primary and secondary level.

How does the voice interactive technology work?

Children look at the letters on screen, say the sounds aloud, and the voice interactive technology ensures correct pronunciation of the written word, thus aiding fluency. Words incorrectly pronounced are flagged for guidance and revision — there's never a sense of failure.

Is it suitable for children with dyslexia?

Yes — it was specifically designed for all children with varying degrees of dyslexia. The repetitive play encourages over-learning (putting information into long-term memory), which benefits individuals with dyslexic tendencies. The clear layout reinforces language development and phonic skills.

Does it work alongside school phonics programmes?

Absolutely. Starting with a revision of 100 key words, iPlay Phonics is applicable to all phonic schemes taught in all schools. The government and the Inspectorate insist on the use of phonics in teaching — iPlay Phonics reinforces this as a resource.

What's the recommended way to use it?

It is recommended that one letter sound is introduced each day and lower case letters are first to be taught. Letters should be introduced by their SOUND and not their names. Reinforcement is very important — the more the game is used, the more fluent the reader becomes.

Can it be used on interactive whiteboards?

Yes — iPlay Phonics is suitable for use on interactive whiteboard group work or on an individual basis. School plans include full whiteboard compatibility for classroom use.

Who founded iPlay Phonics?

iPlay Phonics was founded by Aileen McSorley, a language teacher and specialist in Learning Support at Holy Cross College in Strabane. She came up with the idea after thinking of ways to keep her own two children occupied in the evenings while helping them to learn. Previously published by the University of Glasgow.
